Art Restoration Experience: Merlini Storti's studio

Visit one of the most important restoration studios in Rome, a unique and unforgettable experience.

Valeria Merlini and Daniela Storti, among the leading Italian experts in restoration and conservation, who have restored numerous masterpieces including three paintings by Caravaggio, offer visitors the chance to understand the importance of the artisanal aspect of an artist’s creative work in a journey that will enrich people’s relationship with art.

Restauro Experience
The visit in the Merlini Storti restoration studio gives guests the opportunity see from up close classical and contemporary artworks and experience them through the delicate process of conservation. In their atelier, guests will experience art in a direct and intimate way, being able to observe from up close the restorers’ work and learning about the fascinating world of art techniques and materials.

Uncovering Caravaggio
The experience will start with an exclusive visit at the Odescalchi Palace inside Princess Odescalchi’s house where she keeps the “Conversion of Saul” by Caravaggio, restored by the studio in 2006, a painting that is part of her private collection. Here guests will be able to observe the painting and talk to the restorers about the restoration process that the painting required.

Restoration: a Focus on Caravaggio
The visit starts inside the Sant’Agostino Church in Rome where guests will be able to see the painting “Pilgrim’s Madonna” that was restored by the studio in 2000. The guests, accompanied by the restorers and the studio coordinator, will be able to learn about the painting and the process of its restoration from them and to ask questions to the restorers themselves about the conservation process.
